Fraud detection: As we’ve mentioned, AI’s ability to process vast amounts of unstructured data in near real time allows companies to utilize AI to do in-depth pattern analysis and correlation as data is being created. This can help organizations such as financial institutions detect fraud or recognize anomalous behaviors, as well as protect business from financial losses. 

11. Language translation: Using AI-powered translation tools could help facilitate communication across different languages. By breaking down language barriers, companies could find new markets for their products or services. 

6 Disadvantages of artificial intelligence

While there are many advantages to including AI in our workplaces, there are some disadvantages to consider as well. These can range from the inconvenience of AI tools not performing tasks as expected to major ethical implications. These must be carefully considered before widespread implementation of AI-powered tools.

1. Job role shift: Because automation driven by AI will be able to replace otherwise repetitive and somewhat mundane tasks performed in some job roles today, utilizing AI can lead to job losses for human workers. While some of the job loss can be mitigated by training employees to take on new roles created by AI, part of the consideration for this disadvantage is recognizing the need for unskilled laborers to be able to find work. 

2. Bias: Bias exists in everyone, including those who are building AI algorithms and creating the data and information those algorithms are trained on. This means that bias could be unintentionally introduced into the models. This can lead to unfair outcomes, such as AI models unfairly targeting specific neighborhoods with direct marketing messages that are hurtful. Or, AI models may present historical information inaccurately due to bias in the training materials. 

3. Privacy: Many different industries could benefit from using AI’s massive processing power—but their systems would need to collect and analyze vast amounts of personal data to make the benefits a reality. While using AI in a healthcare setting, for example, could support the diagnostic process, the information may become less secure—and could be used against a patient.

4. Ethical dilemmas: This disadvantage can sound like a movie plot: The AI tools that helped protect people eventually achieve some degree of self-awareness and ultimately decide that people are the problem and take them out. Long before AI gets to that point, we will face ethical questions about using AI in areas such as autonomous weapons and surveillance. Combine this one with the previous disadvantage of bias being unintentionally introduced into systems, and you see AI surveillance tools that unfairly target people of color or other unintentional outcomes. 

5. Security risks: As with all computer systems, AI systems can be vulnerable to cyberattacks and malicious manipulation. Creating a database with so much personal information will make these systems attractive targets for people who profit from selling personal information on the black market or from holding systems hostage for payments. 

6. Lack of transparency: Many of us don’t have advanced computer science degrees to help us navigate how and why AI algorithms make decisions. The inner workings of AI algorithms may be complex and opaque, so if users are trying to understand how and why an AI system got to a specific decision or recommendation, they may struggle to sort through the technical details.
