Thanksgiving Week travel

After a nice Thanksgiving holiday break, we are back to bring you more interesting data from the world we live in. Since a lot of us are probably still digesting—literally and figuratively—our Turkey Day experiences, we thought it would be interesting to examine the TSA data we have been tracking and see how a travel period that is usually among the busiest in the U.S. every single year shook out in 2021.
The following viz shows the traffic going through TSA checkpoints in the U.S., along with their levels last year and the year-over-year percentage change:
As you can see, traffic through TSA checkpoints for Thanksgiving 2021 was up from Thanksgiving 2020, but the year-over-year change is in line with what the rest of 2021 has been doing lately. So, while there was a spike in travel during the extra-long weekend, it wasn’t over the top compared to travel during other periods this year.
It is interesting to note that during the period when people were presumably returning home from Thanksgiving, the 28th stood out; that date marks the highest TSA throughput since February 2020, just before the pandemic started affecting travel in the U.S.
