How is the U.S. government supporting small businesses?

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Small Business Administration has distributed over $500 billion in loans through the Paycheck Protection Program. Data recently made available by the SBA includes name of borrower for loans over $150K but only provides a range of loan amount. For most analysis we are using the minimum possible value of loan disbursement.

For the below analysis, we normalize the loan disbursement amounts by looking at rates per 1,000 people, per job retained and per COVID-19 confirmed cases. These help to judge relativity across states, metros and counties. Some loan applicants also provided information on gender and race/ethnicity which can be a helpful contextual element. The final table below includes details on the name of the recipient and amount of loan.
